COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Creative Writing (Cross-Genre and Digital) is a year-long program that offers students a dynamic and experimental space to explore a wide range of writing forms. Students take two modules per semester, culminating in a creative dissertation submitted in early September. In the autumn semester, the “Creative Writing Forms” workshop introduces a variety of genres—including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, screenwriting, and hybrid or multimodal forms—encouraging students to stretch their creative range through weekly writing challenges and peer feedback. Alongside this, the “Creative Writing in a Digital World” module explores how digital technologies are reshaping literature. Students engage with emerging media like podcasts, interactive narratives, immersive performance, and digital gaming, and experiment with new platforms for storytelling, even touching on the role of generative AI in writing today. In the spring semester, students continue honing their craft through the “Creative Writing Genres” workshop, which delves deeper into popular and evolving genres such as horror, crime, historical fiction, and speculative writing. This module also includes access to the British Archive of Contemporary Writing, offering insight into the working practices of established authors. At the same time, students choose an optional module from across the School, allowing them to broaden their literary and theoretical grounding. Throughout the course, students are supported by experienced tutors and participate in the wider creative community at UEA. The summer is dedicated to the dissertation: an original and substantial creative project in the medium of the student's choice, whether a novel excerpt, podcast series, immersive script, or digital game. Individual supervision and the Creative Writing Research Methodology Conference in May provide guidance and structure. This course is ideal for writers seeking to experiment across forms and platforms while building a versatile and contemporary creative practice.
