COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) is structured to immerse students in both the theory and practice of dramatic writing, fostering creativity from the outset. Over the course of a year, students complete four taught modules—two in the autumn and two in the spring—before focusing on a dissertation during the summer. The autumn semester introduces students to dramaturgical theory and practical writing through the Creative Writing Workshop and the Dramaturgy module, encouraging collaborative critique and the development of a personal writing voice. In the spring, students explore the dramatic media industry and take an optional module, which may span topics like film, literature, or creative criticism, offering flexibility and the opportunity to expand creative and intellectual horizons. Concurrently, students begin work on their dissertation, crafting a full-length script for stage, screen, or radio, with close tutorial supervision. The process involves moving from concept to second draft and includes workshopping a scene with performers for an audience of industry professionals. The curriculum is enriched by a series of screenings, performances, and guest lectures from notable writers. Compulsory modules include “Dramaturgy,” which explores dramatic structures and theory through diverse media and texts, and “Process,” which prepares students for the realities of professional scriptwriting, emphasizing pitching, development, and industry context. A one-day Creative Writing Research Methodology Conference supports dissertation research, bringing together faculty and students from various writing disciplines. The capstone of the course is a 90-credit dissertation that results in a polished script and allows students to showcase their skills to professionals. This comprehensive program blends academic inquiry, creative experimentation, peer feedback, and real-world exposure, equipping students with the tools needed to succeed as professional scriptwriters in today’s diverse media landscape.
