COURSE CURRICULUM

This MA in Broadcast and Digital Journalism offers a hands-on, professionally focused structure that equips students with core skills in multimedia news production. Over the course of the year, students gain experience in recording, editing, and presenting news for both audio and video formats. They create news stories based on local reporting and collaborate in teams to produce TV and radio programs that adhere to professional standards. The first semester focuses on foundational skills, including ethical reporting and journalistic writing, while the second semester expands into more complex practices such as investigative and data journalism, podcast production, and documentary storytelling. Students also explore media law, regulation, and public affairs, gaining an understanding of the legal and civic systems central to holding power to account. The “Broadcast Journalism” module, worth 40 credits, allows students to develop in-depth proficiency in news production, while “Essential UK Public Affairs and Law for Journalists” builds the legal and political knowledge necessary for effective reporting. The capstone of the course is the “Extended Journalism Project,” where students independently create a substantial piece of broadcast journalism in video, audio, or multimedia text format. This final project not only showcases journalistic and production skills but also includes a reflective component that encourages critical engagement with the production process. In addition to core modules, students select one optional module to tailor the course to their specific interests, further broadening their understanding of the media landscape. By the end of the program, graduates are prepared to enter the field with a portfolio of professionally produced work and a deep understanding of the contemporary journalistic environment.
