COURSE CURRICULUM

This course in International Commercial Dispute Resolution provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal issues arising in cross-border commercial disputes. Students begin with the compulsory Postgraduate Legal Skills and Research module and then explore essential areas such as international commercial litigation and arbitration. The International Commercial Litigation module introduces key issues like jurisdiction and applicable law, focusing on UK and European legal sources, while the International Commercial Arbitration module covers the theory and practice of arbitration, a widely used method for resolving disputes in international commercial relationships. Students will also examine significant international instruments, such as the New York Convention and UNCITRAL Model Law, and engage with practical problem-solving in arbitral cases. Additionally, the course offers the opportunity to specialize in areas such as international investment and arbitration law, international construction law, or Sharia’ arbitration (Tahkeem). Students may also participate in the prestigious Willem C Vis International Commercial Moot module, with a chance to represent the university at the Willem C Vis international mooting competition in Vienna. With the agreement of the Course Director, students can personalize their learning by selecting up to 40 credits from other postgraduate courses at UEA, such as those in International Relations, Business, or Economics.The program culminates in a dissertation, where students conduct independent research on a topic related to international commercial dispute resolution. This structure ensures that students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing them for careers in this dynamic field.
