COURSE CURRICULUM

In this course, you will explore the key principles of internet law and intellectual property (IP) rights, focusing on their relationship with technology and other legal principles. You will gain an understanding of intellectual property within its international legal framework, exploring various forms such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights, and the impact of globalization and new technologies on these rights. Particular attention will be given to the UK, US, and European legal systems, though the course takes a global perspective. You will critically engage with the rationales behind intellectual property laws and consider their role in contemporary debates on issues like copyright enforcement and electronic transactions.Additionally, the course allows you to choose from a variety of optional modules that delve deeper into topics related to information technology and intellectual property law, incorporating the latest research from the teaching team. You will also have the opportunity to take modules from other disciplines, such as International Relations or Business, with the consent of the Course Director, enabling you to tailor your studies to your personal interests. At the beginning of the course, you will undertake the compulsory non-credit-bearing Postgraduate Legal Skills module to develop essential research and legal study skills. A key feature of the course is the dissertation, which provides you with the opportunity to conduct independent research in an area of your choice related to internet law or intellectual property.Compulsory modules include "Globalisation of Intellectual Property Law," which covers the importance of intellectual property rights in the global context, and "Internet Law and Governance," which introduces you to the principles and governance models surrounding the legal aspects of the internet. The dissertation and the skills module further strengthen your academic development.
