COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, you will establish a solid foundation in the core areas of law. The curriculum is designed to build essential legal skills, including legal reasoning, research, and writing, while also focusing on career management. The compulsory modules you’ll study include Constitutional and Administrative Law (LAW-4003A), which explores the UK's constitutional framework, government institutions, judicial review, and human rights protections. English Legal System (LAW-4006A) will introduce you to the institutions and processes of the legal system, including how laws are made and interpreted by courts. Law in Practice (LAW-4001B) provides an understanding of how law is applied in real-world contexts, focusing on legal practices, problem-solving, and the role of lawyers in society. Principles of Criminal Law (LAW-4005B) introduces you to the basics of English criminal law, using case studies to explore topics like homicide, property offences, and defences. Contract Law (LAW-4006B) covers the formation, validity, and remedies for breach of contracts, which is a fundamental area of law. Critical Perspectives on Law (LAW-4005A) encourages you to think critically about law, challenging traditional doctrinal views and considering law as a social construct. Lastly, Essential Study Skills - Year 1 (LAW-4009Y), although non-credit bearing, supports your academic development by offering workshops to enhance your study techniques and group collaboration skills.In the second year, you will continue with essential subjects while also beginning to tailor your degree by selecting optional modules that align with your interests. You’ll study EU Law (LAW-5006A), which remains important even after the UK’s exit from the EU, covering the EU’s structure, principles, and key aspects of UK-EU relations. The Law of Trusts (LAW-5007A) will examine the creation and application of trusts in family and commercial contexts, as well as the duties of trustees. Land Law (LAW-5008A) explores the complexities of land ownership, including third-party rights, registered vs. unregistered land, and the socio-legal context of land use. The Law of Tort (LAW-5016B) introduces you to the principles of tort law, covering wrongful acts, negligence, defamation, and product liability. You’ll also continue with Essential Study Skills - Year 2 (LAW-5031Y), which supports your ongoing academic and professional development through workshops focused on group learning and skill-building.In your third year, you will have the flexibility to choose from a broad range of optional modules, allowing you to specialize further in areas that match your career goals. You will take three modules per semester, giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of topics and deepen your legal knowledge.
