COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering course at UEA offers a structured and progressive learning experience across four years, combining academic depth, hands-on projects, and industry engagement. In the first year, students are introduced to core engineering principles including thermodynamics, materials science, electronics, and fluid mechanics. The curriculum emphasizes active learning through design projects and collaborative exercises with peers from other engineering disciplines. Key modules such as Engineering Design and Practice and Engineering Principles and Analysis equip students with fundamental knowledge and practical problem-solving skills. In year two, the focus deepens with advanced topics like solid mechanics, vibration analysis, and thermo-fluids, complemented by an Engineering Design Project that simulates real-world challenges. Students also gain exposure to digital electronics, programming, and renewable energy, with options to switch to an MEng or a Year in Industry pathway depending on academic performance. The third year is dedicated to a full-time industrial placement, where students apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, build professional networks, and gain a competitive edge for future employment. Placements span sectors like motorsport, energy, and automation. In the final year, students study cutting-edge topics such as control systems, Industry 4.0, and stress analysis. The course culminates in a major individual project where students demonstrate their expertise through research, experimentation, or prototype development, often in collaboration with industry. Across all years, there is a strong emphasis on employability, with continuous development of soft skills like teamwork, communication, and project management. Graduates emerge well-prepared for a dynamic career in mechanical engineering.
