COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, you’ll lay the foundation for your journey into electrical and electronic engineering by diving into the core principles of engineering disciplines—ranging from materials and mechanics to energy systems and circuit design. You'll also build your mathematical fluency and develop programming basics, all while applying theory to practice through design and lab-based projects. A big focus is placed on learning by doing, which means early exposure to real-world problem-solving and teamwork—setting the tone for what it means to think like an engineer.Year 2 sharpens your focus on electrical and electronics engineering. You’ll explore power electronics, electrical machines, and both analogue and digital systems—gaining practical skills through circuit design, simulations, and hands-on lab work. Programming becomes more central, with Python introduced as a tool for solving complex engineering problems. The Engineering Design Project allows you to apply your growing knowledge base in a creative, collaborative environment, simulating real engineering challenges and giving you space to explore areas of interest that may inspire your final-year project. In Year 3, you’ll step into industry for up to 60 weeks in a placement that immerses you in the real engineering world. You’ll gain professional experience, build networks, and deepen your technical expertise in a working environment. It’s a year of practical growth, where the theory and skills from university are tested in real projects—giving you a major advantage in terms of employability and clarity about your future direction. Finally, Year 4 is where it all comes together. You’ll take on a substantial individual project—ideally aligned with an industry partner—which is your opportunity to specialise, innovate, and push the boundaries of your knowledge. Alongside your project, you’ll study control systems, power systems, and energy storage—key pillars in modern electrical engineering. From simulating PID controllers to modelling grid-scale storage systems, you'll develop the analytical, computational, and design skills needed to thrive in today’s energy and automation sectors.
