COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of my computer systems engineering course, I focused on building a solid foundation in computing science. This included learning the fundamentals of programming through modules like Programming 1, where I gained hands-on experience with object-oriented programming using Java. I also developed an understanding of web technologies through Web-Based Programming, working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and backend server handling. Additionally, I studied the theoretical side of computing through the Computing Principles module, which introduced me to core concepts such as algorithmic complexity and computer architecture. Systems Development gave me insight into real-world systems engineering practices, while Database Systems familiarised me with relational databases and SQL. These subjects not only taught me programming and technical skills but also helped me develop problem-solving and teamwork abilities through practical assignments and group exercises.In the second year, I progressed to more advanced topics and hardware-related modules. I expanded my programming expertise through Programming 2, where I learned C and C++, and applied that knowledge to build more complex systems. In Data Structures and Algorithms, I learned efficient methods of storing and manipulating data, which is crucial for software development. I also studied computer hardware in depth through modules like Architectures and Operating Systems and Analogue and Digital Electronics, where I built and tested circuits and explored how system software interacts with hardware. The Networks module helped me understand how data is transmitted securely and efficiently, while Embedded Systems introduced me to the design and security challenges of developing software for resource-constrained devices. These modules gave me a comprehensive view of both the software and hardware sides of computing, laying a strong foundation for my placement and final year specialisation.
