COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Biological Sciences degree, students build a strong foundation in fundamental biological concepts while developing essential scientific skills. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and ecology, providing a comprehensive introduction to the study of life processes. One of the key modules, Diversity of Life, explores the diversity of microorganisms, plants, and animals, focusing on evolutionary relationships and the adaptations required for survival in various environments. Students also engage in practical work, including laboratory sessions and field trips, to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.Another central module, Evolution, Behaviour, and Ecology, introduces students to the principles of natural selection, evolutionary theory, and ecological dynamics. It examines how organisms evolve over time, why certain traits develop, and how behaviours such as cooperation and communication arise in the natural world. This module also covers the basics of population genetics and animal behaviour, equipping students with a solid understanding of evolutionary biology.In addition to biological concepts, students are trained in essential professional skills through the Professional Skills for Biosciences module. This includes training in data analysis, scientific writing, presentation, and teamwork, all of which are vital for a successful career in biosciences. The Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology and Genetics modules further deepen students' understanding of biochemical processes and genetic mechanisms, providing the necessary background for more advanced studies in the subsequent years. Together, these modules ensure students develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for a career in biological sciences.
