COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences degree at UEA is designed to offer a comprehensive understanding of life sciences, starting with foundational knowledge in the first year and progressing towards specialized research in the final year. In the first year, students are introduced to essential concepts in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and data science, alongside developing critical scientific skills. Modules such as Diversity of Life and Molecular Biology and Genetics lay the groundwork for understanding the vast diversity of life and the molecular mechanisms that govern life processes. Students also explore evolutionary theory, animal behaviour, and ecology, which form the basis of understanding adaptation and natural selection. In the second year, students gain more specialized knowledge through a range of optional modules that allow for deeper exploration of topics of interest. The professional skills modules further enhance students' abilities in research and data analysis, preparing them for their final-year independent research project. The third year offers an exciting opportunity to study abroad, expanding academic and cultural horizons while gaining exposure to biological concepts not typically covered at UEA. In the final year, students undertake a major research project, either in a laboratory or through fieldwork, where they apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout the degree. This combination of academic learning and practical experience equips students for diverse careers in research, healthcare, or related fields. The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, ensuring that it meets high standards of teaching and professional development.
