COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedicine program at UEA offers a comprehensive and structured approach to understanding human health and disease. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge across key disciplines such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and human physiology. Modules like Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Introduction to Biomedicine provide students with a broad understanding of disease mechanisms, while the Professional Skills for Biosciences module ensures students develop essential skills in data analysis, teamwork, and scientific ethics. Year two builds upon this foundation, diving deeper into clinical laboratory investigations and the molecular basis of human disease through modules like Clinical Genetics and Investigation of Human Disease. Students also gain hands-on experience in specialized areas such as medical microbiology and blood biomedicine. In the third year, students can opt for a year-long placement in an NHS laboratory, where they work as Trainee Biomedical Scientists, gaining practical skills and moving closer to professional registration. The final year focuses on advanced topics such as Cancer Biology and Translational Biomedicine, alongside a substantial research project where students conduct independent investigations in their chosen areas of interest. This mix of theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and professional training ensures graduates are well-equipped to pursue careers in clinical diagnostics, research, or further studies in biomedical sciences.
