COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Biological Sciences degree program provides a comprehensive and dynamic learning experience. In the first year, students focus on foundational topics in biology, including molecular biology, genetics, and cell biology. The program also emphasizes essential scientific methods and techniques, such as applied mathematics and statistics. Modules like Diversity of Life and Evolution, Behaviour, and Ecology introduce students to the diversity of organisms and the evolutionary processes that shape life on Earth, fostering a deep understanding of biological principles. Hands-on laboratory work, field trips, and workshops further enrich students' learning experiences.In the second year, students dive deeper into molecular biology and genetics, with compulsory modules such as Molecular Biology and Genetics. These modules provide a strong theoretical foundation in the molecular mechanisms that underpin biological processes and introduce practical laboratory skills. Students are also encouraged to tailor their degree by selecting optional modules based on their interests, from biochemistry to evolutionary biology.The third year offers a unique opportunity for professional development through a work placement. Students gain valuable industry experience while continuing to develop practical and theoretical knowledge. In the final year, students undertake a significant independent research project, applying the knowledge they’ve accumulated throughout the program. The Bioinformatics and Genomics module explores advanced topics in genomics, preparing students for careers in research and applied biological sciences.
