COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the mathematics program, students will build upon their existing knowledge of calculus, mechanics, and probability. The modules aim to enhance problem-solving skills, introduce new mathematical concepts, and provide experience in group work. Students will also be introduced to mathematical software that will aid in their studies throughout the degree.The compulsory modules in Year 1 include Linear Equations and Digital Skills, which covers matrix theory and the use of digital tools like LaTeX, symbolic algebra software, and Excel for mathematical problem-solving. Proofs and Limits introduces foundational mathematical concepts such as natural numbers, rational numbers, and set-theoretic notation, focusing on precise definitions and proof techniques. Real Analysis and Group Theory explores advanced mathematical topics, including the theory behind calculus and the study of symmetry through group theory. Computation and Modelling introduces mathematical modeling and programming in Python, while also covering topics such as Newton's laws of motion. Probability and Multivariable Calculus delves into probability theory, random variables, and the applications of multivariable calculus. Finally, the Calculus module provides an in-depth study of rates of change, derivatives, integration, and ordinary differential equations, with the added benefit of learning to use Maple for solving differential equations numerically.In the second year, students continue to deepen their mathematical knowledge with compulsory modules such as Complex Functions and Linear Algebra, Complex Integration and Ring Theory, Differential Equations and Applied Methods, and Fluid Flow - Theory and Computation. These modules focus on advanced concepts such as complex integration, differential equations, and fluid dynamics, alongside applied computational methods.The third year is dedicated to a professional work placement, providing valuable real-world experience. In the final year, students choose from a wide range of optional modules and may also undertake a mathematics project, allowing them to explore a topic of personal interest in greater depth.
