COURSE CURRICULUM

The structure of this four-year Geophysics degree program offers a comprehensive progression from foundational knowledge to specialized skills. In Year 1, you are introduced to key environmental topics and develop essential research skills through compulsory modules such as Our World, where global environmental challenges like climate change and pollution are explored, and Sustainability Challenges and Solutions, which focuses on sustainability concepts. This year also emphasizes data collection and analysis in the Data and Research Skills A and B modules, ensuring you build critical thinking and research abilities.Year 2 offers more flexibility with compulsory modules like Geomorphic Systems, where you study Earth processes such as tectonics and sedimentology, and Earth's Critical Zone, focusing on the interactions between rock, soil, water, air, and organisms. You will also have the opportunity to tailor your studies with optional modules in areas like geophysics, hydrogeology, and volcanology. The Research Practice module further develops your research skills, preparing you for your final-year project.Year 3 is dedicated to an industrial work placement, providing invaluable real-world experience and enhancing your employability. During this year, you will gain practical skills and insights into various sectors, which will be beneficial for your future career.In the final year, you will focus on your Independent Project, where you investigate an area of interest in depth, applying everything you’ve learned. The project allows you to demonstrate your ability to plan and execute research, with support from a supervisor. Optional modules like Geophysical Hazards and Paleoclimatology give you the opportunity to specialize further.
