COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology and Conservation degree is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of ecology, starting with foundational knowledge in the first year. In this year, students study core topics like biodiversity, taxonomy, evolution, and the challenges faced by modern ecologists. Key modules include Evolution, Behaviour, and Ecology, which explores natural selection and adaptation, and Issues and Approaches in Ecology, which includes field trips to learn practical skills like data collection and project planning. Additionally, students engage in the module on Sustainability Challenges and Solutions, which covers concepts such as carbon footprints and sustainable development.In the second year, students build on their knowledge by exploring community and population ecology, and gain hands-on experience through a two-week field course. They also delve into the role of citizen science and Big Data in ecological management. The third year is dedicated to a work placement, allowing students to apply their skills in a real-world setting.The final year focuses on an independent research project, where students work with faculty members to design and carry out their own research, either in the field or lab. Students can choose from specialized modules based on their interests, such as biodiversity conservation or the evolution of social behavior. By the end of the degree, students have developed a strong theoretical and practical grounding in ecology and conservation, preparing them for careers in the field or further academic study.
