COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BSc Biological Sciences with a Placement Year program, you'll receive a comprehensive introduction to the biological sciences alongside essential subjects like chemistry, mathematics, and data science. This broad foundation allows you to build key scientific skills that are vital for future research, alongside fostering creative problem-solving abilities. Modules in the first year cover a wide range of biological topics, including the diversity of life on Earth, molecular biology and genetics, evolutionary theory, cell biology and physiology, biological chemistry, and professional skills development. These modules will equip you with a strong base of knowledge and practical skills that are essential for your progression through the degree.In the second year, you will begin to specialize in areas that interest you the most, choosing from a variety of optional modules. You'll also enhance your research, data analysis, and presentation skills, preparing you for the final year research project. One of the highlights of the second year is the “Further Professional Skills for Biosciences” module, where you’ll focus on experimental design, data visualization, and how to engage in effective communication within the scientific community. This year also offers opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, including language courses and modules from other science schools.Year three is dedicated to gaining practical experience through a work placement, where you'll apply your knowledge in a real-world setting. With strong support from UEA’s established network of partners, you will have the chance to work with leading organizations in the biological sciences field, further enhancing your skills and employability.In the final year, you'll dive deeper into specific biological topics of your choice and undertake a substantial independent research project. You may also opt for an ecological research project that incorporates fieldwork. This hands-on experience, combined with in-depth study, will prepare you for a career in research or other areas where biological expertise is essential. The flexible nature of the course, along with the opportunity for a placement year and a diverse set of research options, ensures that you are well-equipped for the future.
