COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year course in Geophysics with a work placement offers a combination of foundational scientific knowledge and practical experience, structured to provide both academic depth and real-world exposure. The first year focuses on compulsory modules that introduce essential topics such as environmental challenges, sustainability, Earth systems, mathematical methods, and computational modelling. These modules lay the groundwork for understanding the scientific principles of geophysics and developing analytical skills through practical applications. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with modules in research practices, advanced mathematical methods, and fluid dynamics, while allowing students to tailor their studies by selecting from a range of optional modules. The second-year compulsory research practice module helps students build on their fieldwork and data collection skills, preparing them for independent research in their final year. The third year is dedicated to gaining industry experience through a 9-14 month work placement. This year offers students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a professional setting, with support from a UEA mentor and a Work Based Learning module to help reflect on the experience. This placement year enhances employability by providing hands-on experience in various sectors, including local government, NGOs, and multinational companies. The combination of academic modules and the industrial placement equips students with a diverse skill set, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities in geophysics, environmental science, and related fields.
