COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year full-time Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) degree program combines theoretical learning with hands-on clinical experience, preparing students for a career in the field. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in linguistics, phonetics, psychology, and biology, alongside SLT theory and practice. They focus on developmental speech and language disorders, stuttering, and basic intervention approaches, while also gaining initial clinical experience through pre-clinical placements with both children and adults. Research methods and evidence-based practice are introduced, and interprofessional learning is emphasized through collaborative sessions with students from Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. The second year expands on clinical knowledge, covering areas such as deafness, intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities, acquired communication disorders, and mental health. Clinical placements become more extensive, with students engaging in observational and direct practice. Research skills are further developed, and students refine their assessment and intervention techniques. In the final year, students focus on specialized areas like motor speech disorders, dysphagia, and voice disorders. They work towards clinical autonomy, preparing for professional practice through a final research project and an extended clinical placement, where they practice decision-making and intervention planning. This curriculum ensures that by graduation, students have the necessary academic foundation, practical skills, and professional competency to begin their careers as qualified Speech and Language Therapists.
