COURSE CURRICULUM

In your first year, the focus is on building a strong foundation in psychological theory and research, with an emphasis on how this knowledge applies in real-world contexts. You will engage with key concepts in psychology through an integrative approach that includes five core themes: constructing psychology, explaining behavior, questioning reality, understanding yourself, and applying psychology to the real world. This year will introduce you to both quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing you to develop a critical perspective and research skills. The compulsory module, Introduction to Psychology (PSY-4010Y), provides you with the theoretical background and research techniques necessary for understanding human behavior. In your second year, you will continue to develop your understanding of various branches of psychology. This includes modules on Social and Developmental Psychology, where you will explore social perception, prejudice, and the development of cognitive, emotional, and social processes in children and adolescents. You will also delve into Cognitive and Biological Psychology, examining how we process information and the relationship between brain function and cognition. The year also includes a module on Experimental Psychological Analysis, which enhances your understanding of statistical methods and research techniques, and Assessing and Analyzing Individual Differences, which focuses on individual variability in areas such as personality and intelligence. In addition, Psychology in Context will provide a historical and philosophical understanding of the discipline and its relationship to wider society. Alongside these compulsory modules, you can choose an optional module that aligns with your career interests, such as creative writing or business.Year 3 is dedicated to a work-based placement, offering you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. This practical year allows you to apply psychological theories and research in the workplace, helping to develop your professional skills and enhancing your employability. The Placement Year (PSY-5020Y) is a key component of this stage of the course, allowing you to integrate academic learning with real-world practice. In your final year, you will complete a substantial research project that reflects your intellectual interests and career aspirations. Supported by a supervisor, you will design and carry out an empirical research project, drawing on a specific form of data gathering and analysis. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your independent research capabilities, using the skills and knowledge you have developed throughout the course. The compulsory Research Project (PSY-6002Y) will help you refine your research design, data collection, and analysis skills, as well as develop your ability to communicate your findings in a formal report. Additionally, you will have the chance to select optional modules, allowing you to specialize in areas that align with your interests or broaden your knowledge with an interdisciplinary perspective.
