COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Ecology and Conservation degree, students build a solid foundation in ecological principles and fieldwork. Core modules such as Evolution, Behaviour and Ecology, Diversity of Life, and Sustainability Challenges and Solutions explore key concepts like biodiversity, evolution, and sustainability, giving students a deep understanding of ecological processes. Practical field trips across East Anglia provide hands-on experience in diverse habitats, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world environments. Emphasis is placed on developing both theoretical knowledge and field skills, ensuring a well-rounded education.The second year advances this knowledge, focusing on population and community ecology, as well as resource management. Students will engage in a two-week field course, where they’ll further hone their skills in surveying and ecological data collection. The module Population Ecology and Management introduces crucial concepts like density-dependent and independent factors, offering insight into effective population management in the context of global environmental changes. Additionally, students will explore the role of citizen science and Big Data in ecology, essential for modern research and conservation efforts.In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, working closely with faculty members to address real ecological questions. Specialization options allow students to delve into areas such as marine ecology, biodiversity conservation, and environmental politics. By the end of the degree, students will be well-equipped with the skills, experience, and knowledge necessary for careers in research, conservation, or policy, ready to make a meaningful impact in the field of ecology and conservation.
