COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the three-year BSc Computing Science program, you'll begin by mastering the fundamental concepts of computing, with a focus on programming. The curriculum emphasizes practical problem-based learning, which will allow you to apply programming concepts in various domains. You'll learn how to program using high-level languages, such as Java, and study mathematical modules relevant to computing science. You'll also delve into data manipulation using industry-standard tools and techniques, equipping you with valuable skills for your future career. The compulsory modules in the first year include Programming 1, where you'll be introduced to object-oriented programming; Systems Development, which covers the processes and practices involved in developing computer-based systems, including project management and security considerations; Computing Principles, which provides an understanding of the theoretical foundations of computer architecture and algorithmic complexity; Database Systems, focusing on relational databases and SQL programming; and Web-Based Programming, where you'll learn to build web applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and backend server development, alongside web security.In your second year, you'll deepen your understanding of computing systems and enhance your programming skills. You’ll study core areas such as data structures, algorithms, and operating systems. You’ll also gain expertise in software engineering and its methodologies. This year includes compulsory modules like Data Structures and Algorithms, which will help you develop efficient algorithms and understand the implementation of various data structures; Programming 2, which expands on the first programming module, introducing C and C++ for low-level programming and advanced concepts in Java; Architectures and Operating Systems, where you'll explore hardware and system software and their interactions; and Software Engineering, which focuses on software development methodologies, project management, and system design.In your final year, you’ll undertake an independent research project, allowing you to investigate a specific area of computing science in greater depth. This project will enable you to apply all the knowledge and skills you've acquired throughout the degree, developing your ability to work independently and present your findings effectively. The compulsory module for this year is the Computing Project, where you’ll develop a significant piece of work, be it a software or hardware system, and receive one-to-one supervision to help guide your project. You’ll also choose optional modules that align with your interests, allowing you to specialize in areas that reflect the school’s current research and strengths. Throughout the year, you'll refine your academic writing, communication, and project management skills, preparing you for a professional career in computing.
