COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedicine program at UEA is a well-rounded, four-year course that provides a thorough grounding in biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, and human physiology. The first year introduces students to core scientific concepts through modules like Introduction to Biomedicine, which covers the molecular and cellular basis of human diseases and their treatment, and Biological Chemistry, which explores the physical and chemical principles underlying cellular metabolism. Additional modules such as Cell Biology and Physiology and Molecular Biology and Genetics deepen students' understanding of biological systems, cell structures, and genetic processes essential for human health. A key feature of the first year is the Professional Skills for Biosciences module, which prepares students for future employment by helping them develop skills in data analysis, teamwork, ethics, and scientific communication.In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with more advanced modules. Human Physiology provides in-depth knowledge of human organ systems and how diseases affect their function. Clinical Genetics explores how genetic information is applied in clinical settings for disease diagnosis and treatment, while the Investigation of Human Disease module focuses on laboratory techniques for understanding disease mechanisms and assessing treatments. These modules equip students with practical skills in clinical biochemistry and molecular medicine.In the third year, students have the opportunity to tailor their studies with a work placement or research experience, applying their knowledge in real-world settings. The final year focuses on specialized areas of biomedicine, with students selecting from optional modules like Translational Biomedicine and completing a substantial research project, which allows them to conduct independent research on a chosen topic under expert supervision. This project is an essential part of the program, preparing students for careers in biomedical science or further study.
