COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of your Biological Sciences degree, you’ll be introduced to essential biological concepts, along with key subjects such as chemistry, mathematics, and data science. You’ll gain foundational knowledge and scientific skills that will be crucial for your future research and studies. The modules you’ll study will cover a wide range of topics, including the diversity of life, where you’ll explore microorganisms, plants, and animals, and their evolutionary relationships. In molecular biology and genetics, you’ll learn about DNA and its functions, as well as the applications of this knowledge in biotechnology. The evolution, behaviour, and ecology module delves into questions about natural selection, animal behaviour, and ecological principles, helping you understand the driving forces of life on Earth. Cell biology and physiology will provide you with a deeper understanding of cellular processes and their relevance to human health. Professional skills for biosciences will equip you with key transferable skills, such as data analysis, communication, and teamwork, which will be essential throughout your career. Biological chemistry will introduce you to the chemical processes that underpin biological systems. In your second year, you’ll begin to specialize, selecting optional modules that match your interests, and further develop practical skills for your research project in the final year. The third year will allow you to undertake an independent research project, either in the lab or field, which will strengthen your understanding of biological science and prepare you for future employment or advanced study.
