COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the degree, students focus on developing core skills in two chosen languages while being introduced to translation theory and practice. They study compulsory modules in French, Spanish, and Japanese depending on their chosen language combination, with levels adjusted based on prior knowledge. These modules aim to build foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while also introducing cultural and grammatical elements to support communication. Alongside language learning, students take an introductory module in Translation Studies, which explores the core principles and significance of translation in a globalised world. In the second year, students continue to build on their language proficiency and begin to explore more specific areas of translation across different media. They engage with practical translation tasks and cultural studies, helping them to understand the challenges of communicating across languages. A highlight of the degree is the third year, which is spent abroad in countries where the target languages are spoken. This immersive experience enhances linguistic fluency and cultural awareness. Depending on the language combination, students may study at a partner university or undertake work placements, offering real-world insights and furthering their independence. In the final year, students return to take specialised modules in translation, including advanced translation between English and their chosen languages. They work with a range of texts such as journalistic, literary, technical, and commercial materials, and may explore areas like subtitling, dubbing, and interpreting. The course aims to prepare students for careers in professional translation, language services, and intercultural communication by equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
