COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy course offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of some of the most important questions in human thought, preparing students for a wide range of careers and further study. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of philosophical inquiry through modules such as Classic Readings in Philosophy, The Meaning of Life, and Ethics of Technology. These modules encourage students to think critically and analytically, while also exploring how philosophy applies to real-world issues, from politics and medicine to questions of identity and purpose.In the second year, the course deepens with core modules like Philosophy of History and Politics and Ethics, which examine how ideas about power, freedom, and morality have shaped societies and continue to influence political and ethical debates today. Students also have the flexibility to tailor their learning through optional modules and guided themes in areas such as gender studies, literature, and psychology, or to gain hands-on experience through a placement module that connects academic learning with the workplace.The third year is spent studying abroad at one of the university’s partner institutions around the world. This offers a unique chance to experience different academic environments, broaden cultural horizons, and gain valuable life experience that enhances both personal development and employability.In the final year, students return to engage with advanced philosophical questions in modules such as Mind and Language and Ethics for Third Years. These modules build on prior learning and encourage deeper analysis of how we think, communicate, and live ethically. Students can choose to undertake a dissertation or a special subject project, working closely with academic staff to explore a topic of their own choosing in depth. By the end of the course, students graduate with a strong foundation in critical thinking, argumentation, and ethical reasoning—skills highly valued in many professions, from education and policy to media, law, and beyond.
