COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the Media Studies course, students are introduced to key theories, debates, and thinkers that form the foundation of media analysis. Through core modules such as Analysing Television, Media Industries, and Media Representation in a Global Context, they explore how media is produced, consumed, and understood across various formats and cultural contexts. Modules like Digital Media: Concepts, Technologies & Cultures and Theorising Media and Digital Culture allow students to examine how digital platforms and media technologies have reshaped communication and cultural expression. The first year emphasises developing analytical and academic writing skills, preparing students for advanced study.In Year 2, students delve deeper into specialist areas, with modules like Theorising Television and Digital Mediascapes offering critical insights into evolving platforms and global media participation. Students also have the chance to explore practical media work and may complete internships, gaining industry experience with radio stations, production companies, or archives.Year 3 is spent abroad at a partner institution, providing an immersive international experience that enhances students' academic, cultural, and personal growth.In the final year, students refine their research skills through a dissertation and select from specialist modules covering areas like science fiction, gender, or adaptation. The compulsory Researching Contemporary Media Cultures module helps them critically engage with advanced theories while preparing for academic or professional futures.
