COURSE CURRICULUM

In the BA in English Literature and History, students begin by exploring the historical development of English and how literature and history intersect, starting with foundational studies in the first year. They delve into subjects like the global spread of English, its colonial legacy, and the influence of different forms of English across time and geography. The first year includes modules such as Reading Literature in History, Slow Reading, and Writing Across Borders. In the second year, students deepen their expertise in both subjects by choosing from a wide range of optional modules that may include creative writing, professional writing skills, and historical topics from different periods. A compulsory module, History's Stories, develops employability skills by encouraging students to present historical research in creative ways. The third year is dedicated to studying abroad at one of UEA's partner institutions, offering a chance to experience different academic and cultural perspectives while enhancing communication skills. Finally, in the fourth year, students specialize further by selecting modules that align with their academic interests, such as medieval literature, feminist writing, or contemporary detective fiction. They also have the option to complete a dissertation in either literature or history. The final year provides flexibility, allowing students to balance their focus between the two subjects according to their passions and academic goals.
