COURSE CURRICULUM

In your first year, the Liberal Arts course will introduce you to a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, theories, and methods. The focus will be on encouraging you to explore subjects in-depth and apply them together to understand the complexities of the modern world. The course will start with core interdisciplinary modules that will help you develop the skills needed to approach learning through interdisciplinary methods. One compulsory module, Ways to Knowledge: Disciplines and Practices, will provide an introduction to interdisciplinary study by exploring the methodologies, theories, and practices of different disciplines through case studies. This module will lay the foundation for understanding how different subjects connect and how interdisciplinary approaches can help you analyze complex issues.In addition to the core module, you will also make elective choices from a broad range of arts and humanities subjects. These electives will guide you toward choosing a major discipline, with the opportunity to select a minor pathway. The minor could be chosen from a variety of areas, such as arts and humanities, social sciences, or even sciences, allowing you to tailor your studies according to your interests.In your second year, you will continue to study a broad-based module that further develops your ability to apply multiple-disciplinary perspectives to increasingly complex problems. The core module, Bodies of Knowledge: Interdisciplinarity in Practice, will provide practical experience by working on a real-world challenge posed by an external consultant, such as someone from the business, social policy, or media sectors. In a 'think tank' team, you'll research the problem, debate its causes, and propose solutions, before presenting your findings to the consultant and your peers. Alongside this, you will focus on your major and minor subjects, studying them in more depth and continuing to build on the cross-disciplinary knowledge you developed in the first year.Your third year will be spent studying abroad at a partner university, where you’ll take courses that complement your studies at UEA. This year will allow you to immerse yourself in local culture and possibly learn a new language, offering a truly global perspective on your Liberal Arts education.In your final year, you’ll combine your major and minor modules with a substantial research project tailored to your interests. This project will be supervised by an academic in your chosen field, and with support from the Liberal Arts team, you’ll have the opportunity to create a unique degree that reflects your academic journey and personal interests.
