COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History course at UEA offers a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating journey through the study of the past. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in British, European, and global history, covering key periods from the medieval era through to the twentieth century. Core modules introduce major historical themes such as the Reformation, industrialisation, nationalism, and imperialism, while also developing essential research and analytical skills through the study of historical methods and source analysis. In the second year, students have complete flexibility to design their own academic path, choosing from a wide range of modules that span diverse regions and time periods. This allows for either a broad or more focused historical approach, depending on individual interests and career goals. Students can also study abroad, learn a language, or take modules from other disciplines. The third year is dedicated to studying abroad at one of UEA’s partner institutions, offering students the opportunity to experience a new academic and cultural environment. This year enhances global perspectives, communication skills, and personal confidence, while providing a unique edge in future employment. In the final year, students specialise further by selecting advanced modules and a focused topic led by experts actively researching in the field. There is also the option to write a dissertation, giving students the chance to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. Throughout the course, students gain critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that are highly valued in a range of careers, making the degree not only academically rewarding but also a strong foundation for the future.
