COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Art History, Museums and Galleries at UEA is structured across four years, beginning with a foundational first year that introduces students to the key concepts, skills, and disciplines of art history and museum studies. Students explore the study of art in context, focusing on visual analysis, object-based learning, and the ethical and political dimensions of museums and galleries. Core modules in Year 1 include hands-on learning at the Sainsbury Centre, introductions to art history and portraiture, and a study of how environments and objects carry meaning.In Year 2, the focus shifts to developing more critical and theoretical tools through modules like The Lives of Objects, which examines how art objects move and gain significance across contexts, and Artists/Museums, where students explore how contemporary artists engage with the institution of the museum itself. Modules in this year deepen interdisciplinary understanding and consider the contemporary relevance of art and museum practices.Year 3 is spent studying abroad at one of UEA’s partner universities. This immersive experience allows students to see their discipline from different cultural and academic perspectives while building life skills and professional networks.In the final year, students apply their learning through practical and research-based work. The compulsory Museum Work: Theory & Practice module prepares students for careers in curating, conservation, and education, while a dissertation allows them to independently explore a topic of personal and academic interest. Optional modules offer advanced study of critical issues such as decolonisation, identity, memory, and sustainability, drawing from global and historical perspectives. This final year consolidates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, setting students up for further study or a wide range of careers in the arts and heritage sectors.
