COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the History and Politics course, students are introduced to foundational knowledge and key concepts that will shape their understanding in both disciplines. The curriculum is structured around compulsory modules that focus on major political theories, global political structures, and essential historical methodologies. Modules such as "Rights & Wrongs: An Introduction to Social and Political Theory" introduce influential thinkers and debates around liberty, equality, and fraternity, setting the stage for deeper political inquiry. "Power, (Dis)order & Security" and "Globalisation, Governance and Justice" delve into the core dynamics of global politics, exploring topics like sovereignty, international conflict, and transnational challenges like terrorism and environmental crises. In parallel, history-focused modules like "Introduction to Modern History" provide students with insight into the major political and societal shifts from the late 18th century to World War I, examining industrialisation, nationalism, and imperialism. "Doing History" complements this by teaching historical methods through the analysis of primary sources and encourages critical thinking, a skill emphasized throughout the program. In the second year, the structure becomes more flexible, allowing students to tailor their studies toward either discipline or maintain a balanced approach. There are no compulsory modules, and students have the option to explore diverse topics, learn a new language, or even study modules from other areas within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. An optional year abroad is also available in the second or third year, offering a unique opportunity to study at one of UEA’s partner institutions worldwide. This experience enhances students' global perspective, communication skills, and employability. In the final year, students deepen their expertise through advanced modules in specific areas such as Japanese modernization, Yugoslav nationalism, or the Third Reich. They may also choose to write a dissertation on a topic of personal academic interest, allowing for focused and independent research.
