COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art History course offers a comprehensive and evolving academic journey across four years, combining theoretical understanding with hands-on engagement, critical reflection, and global perspectives. In the first year, students begin by immersing themselves in the study of art and the creative process, focusing on direct interaction with artworks to develop analytical and visual literacy skills. Key compulsory modules include “Learning on Site: The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts,” which introduces students to the SCVA’s world-class collection and architecture, and “Introduction to Art History,” which familiarizes them with the discipline’s key themes and methods. Alongside this, modules like “Environment, Art and Culture” encourage students to think about how art interacts with its physical, social, and cultural surroundings, while “Portraiture and Identity” explores how artists have captured and shaped concepts of selfhood across different historical and cultural contexts. This foundational year blends theory with experience, sparking critical thinking and academic development. In the second year, students gain more autonomy, selecting from a wide array of specialized modules that align with their interests. These allow deeper exploration of specific periods and problems in art and history. A notable compulsory module, “Art in the Contemporary World,” focuses on the modern-day uses of art in society and examines how museums, galleries, and everyday contexts shape its meaning and value today. Students explore how art intersects with politics, identity, and societal change, developing a nuanced understanding of its relevance beyond the academic sphere. In the third year, students broaden their perspectives further through a year of study abroad. This immersive international experience fosters academic growth, cultural awareness, and personal confidence. It also allows students to explore how art and history are studied and understood in different cultural contexts, which enhances their adaptability and global awareness. Finally, the fourth year is shaped around in-depth academic exploration and independent research. Students choose three advanced modules from a diverse selection covering contemporary and historical issues like decolonisation, psychology, inequality, memory, and revolutions. The capstone of the degree is the dissertation module, where students conduct an independent research project on a subject of personal interest, guided by faculty support. This final task not only consolidates the skills developed throughout the course—such as research, analysis, and argumentation—but also allows for a deeply personalized and intellectually fulfilling academic achievement. Throughout all four years, the program is structured to nurture not only disciplinary knowledge but also critical thinking, communication, and cultural literacy—skills essential for a wide range of professional pathways.
