COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students will be introduced to the basics of film history, film theory, and visual history. They’ll learn about the major academic debates in these areas and gain skills in analyzing films and historical documents. Modules such as Doing Film History and Visual(ising) History will help students understand the historical and cultural significance of films as well as the visual sources that help construct historical narratives. Students will also be introduced to modern history with a focus on political, social, and economic transformations in Britain and Europe.In Year 2, students will build on these foundational studies by delving into more specialized topics like propaganda, film theory, and world cinemas. They'll also have the opportunity to take placements with organizations such as local radio stations or television production companies, gaining practical experience in the media field.Year 3 is an exciting opportunity for students to study abroad at one of UEA’s partner institutions. This year is meant to broaden students' academic perspectives and help them develop confidence and enhanced communication skills.Finally, in Year 4, students will focus on advanced research in film studies and history. They will choose specialized modules, such as Contesting the Past: Representation and Memory, and undertake an independent research project in the form of a dissertation. The curriculum ensures that students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills that will be valuable in their future careers in media, history, and beyond.
