COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Politics degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in both disciplines while offering increasing flexibility and specialization over four years. In the first year, students take compulsory modules that introduce them to major political theories and contemporary global issues, alongside foundational studies in modern history and historical methodologies. These modules cover essential themes like liberty, equality, fraternity, global political order, and historical transformations in Europe from the late 18th century to World War I. Students are encouraged to critically engage with both primary texts and current global events, preparing them for deeper study. In the second year, students have the freedom to tailor their education to their interests, with no compulsory modules. This allows them to focus on either history or politics or maintain a balance between the two. They can also study abroad, learn a new language, or take modules from other disciplines. The third year is spent entirely abroad at a partner institution, offering students a unique opportunity to experience different academic and cultural environments. This year enhances their understanding of global perspectives, builds independence, and strengthens communication skills, while not affecting their final degree classification. In the final year, students return to complete their studies with a more focused approach. They choose from a range of specialized modules covering diverse historical and political topics, such as modern Japan, Yugoslav communism, and the Third Reich. They may also explore broader themes like politics and popular culture or the history of sport. Students have the option to undertake a dissertation, allowing for independent research on a topic of personal interest. Overall, the course combines academic rigor with flexibility and global experience, equipping students with critical thinking skills and a well-rounded understanding of the political and historical forces that shape the world.
