COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the English Literature degree, students are introduced to a wide variety of literature through compulsory modules that develop skills in literary analysis. These modules cover both contemporary literature, featuring authors like Terrance Hayes and Inua Ellams, and classical works such as Homer's The Odyssey. Students explore how ancient texts continue to influence writers and engage with the global history of the English language. This year also introduces the relationship between literature and history, with a focus on how literary criticism has evolved over time. The module Writing Across Borders examines the spread of English and its impact on global literature, exploring the legacies of colonialism and cultural exchange. Additionally, there is an opportunity for students to experiment with creative-critical writing and explore subjects beyond English, such as politics or history.In Year 2, students have more flexibility in their course choices. There are no compulsory modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. They can explore English literary history or study global literatures, while also developing their creative writing skills. This year provides opportunities for students to experiment with creative-critical writing and take interdisciplinary modules. They are encouraged to engage with topics from other fields such as history, politics, or languages. To ensure a well-rounded education, students must take at least three modules in literature written before 1789, providing them with a deep understanding of earlier literary traditions.In Year 3, students spend a year studying abroad at one of UEA's partner institutions. This year abroad enhances academic understanding, builds confidence, and provides valuable international experience. In the final year, students choose from a variety of specialist modules that reflect the research interests of UEA's staff. They can explore specific historical periods, genres, or theoretical concepts. Additionally, students can undertake an optional dissertation to work one-on-one with a tutor on a topic of their choice
