COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the English Literature and Creative Writing degree, students engage with a mix of creative writing and literature modules that lay the foundation for their academic and creative development. The creative writing modules focus on key forms such as prose fiction, poetry, and scriptwriting, encouraging students to explore different techniques and develop their own voice as writers. In addition, the literature modules provide an understanding of English Literature's historical context, from its medieval origins to the modern era, helping students hone their analytical skills and deepen their understanding of literary texts. The first semester emphasizes learning fundamental creative writing techniques, while the second semester encourages experimentation with avant-garde techniques and genre exploration. These modules are designed to give students a solid grounding in both critical analysis and creative practice, while fostering a sense of their writerly identity. In the second year, students continue to build on their skills by focusing on a specific creative writing form, such as prose, poetry, or scriptwriting, with the opportunity to experiment with non-fiction and publishing as well. They also begin to share their work with peers and published authors in workshops, allowing them to receive constructive feedback and improve their craft. Literature modules in this year give students the chance to dive deeper into different literary periods, while also offering innovative creative-critical modules that combine reading and writing in a dynamic way. In the third year, students participate in a year abroad, providing them with the opportunity to broaden their perspective and gain valuable cultural experiences. In their final year, students refine their creative writing skills by engaging in intensive workshops and writing a dissertation, while also choosing from a wide range of literature modules to specialize in specific topics or genres. This year allows students to focus on their own creative practice and prepare for a career in writing or related fields.
