COURSE CURRICULUM

The degree program in Philosophy and Literature at UEA is structured to provide a rich and diverse academic experience, combining the analytical depth of philosophy with the creativity of literature. In the first year, students will develop foundational skills in both disciplines, exploring literature from the Middle Ages onwards and engaging with key philosophical ideas about human nature from both Western and Eastern traditions. This balanced mix allows students to approach literary and philosophical texts through critical reading and analysis, examining how each discipline informs the other. The first-year modules include "The Meaning of Life," which explores philosophical perspectives on existential questions, and "Modern Readings in Philosophy," which examines significant thinkers such as Descartes, Locke, and Nietzsche. Students also delve into the philosophy of social transformation, considering how philosophy addresses social and political issues. Literature modules like "Reading Now" encourage a deep engagement with literary texts, particularly through the practice of close reading, enabling students to understand the significance of reading in both historical and contemporary contexts.In the second year, students begin to integrate their philosophical and literary studies more closely, with the module "Literature and Philosophy," which examines how these disciplines converse with one another. This year also offers greater choice, allowing students to explore areas such as aesthetics, existentialism, and philosophy of religion. Optional modules like "Philosophy Meets the Arts" invite students to explore the intersection of philosophy and the arts, particularly through cinema and literature. Students may also consider a placement module, which allows them to apply their developing skills in real-world settings.The third year is an exciting opportunity for students to study abroad, enriching their academic experience by immersing themselves in different cultural and academic contexts. Students will gain valuable global perspectives, which will deepen their understanding of both philosophy and literature. The year abroad is supported by UEA's network of partner institutions, and students will work with advisors to choose an appropriate destination and prepare for their studies abroad.In the final year, students select advanced modules in both philosophy and literature, with the option to undertake a dissertation that integrates both fields. This independent project allows students to explore a topic of their choice in depth, drawing on their interdisciplinary knowledge. Modules like "Mind and Language" and "Ethics" challenge students to engage with complex philosophical issues, while also refining their ability to critically analyze texts. The combination of specialized modules and the dissertation ensures that students graduate with a sophisticated understanding of both philosophy and literature, ready to pursue a wide range of career paths.
