COURSE CURRICULUM

In your first year, you’ll begin to lay the foundations for practical drama work while exploring acting techniques and gaining knowledge of technical areas such as stage management and lighting. The curriculum will enhance your analytical skills through literature modules, which will cover a wide range of texts across different periods, deepening your understanding of literature and drama. Additionally, you’ll get an introduction to dramatic traditions from around the world, studying global dramatic literatures and performance practices.Compulsory modules include Working in the Theatre 1: Introduction to Technical Theatre (LDCD4026A), where you'll work practically in a Drama Studio, developing foundational production skills in areas like sound, lighting, costume, design, and stage management. The Actor's Craft (LDCD4025A) introduces you to the basic elements of acting, including physical theatre and acting techniques such as Meisner and Actioning, helping you develop your skills in bodily, vocal, and ensemble training. Reading Now (LDCL4009A) focuses on the practice of close reading and explores the significance of literature and the act of reading. Global Theatres (LDCD4024B) introduces a wide range of theatre and performance practices from around the world, such as African storytelling, Chinese Kunqu, and Caribbean carnival. Slow Reading (LDCL4011B) builds on your close reading skills by engaging deeply with a single text and analyzing it from various critical perspectives. Lastly, Writing Across Borders (LDCL4021B) explores the history of English as it crossed geographical, linguistic, and social borders, examining the effects of colonization and globalization on the language and its literature. In the second year, you’ll have the opportunity to specialize and choose from a broad range of modules that suit your developing interests in both theatre and literature. You will study Applied Drama and Creative Industries (LDCD5065A), which gives a critical and practical grounding in the professional theatre sector, including funding, marketing, and community-based performance practices like theatre in education and forum theatre. This module is vital for preparing you for potential careers in the arts and offers opportunities for work placements or internships. In your third year, you’ll have the chance to study abroad at one of UEA’s partner institutions, an invaluable experience that will help you develop confidence, communication skills, and a global perspective on your studies. This year abroad will not count toward your final degree classification, but the experience will enhance your CV and academic growth. In the final year, you can choose from modules that delve into the intersection of identity and performance, experimental practice, or that further develop your skills as an actor. Many students opt to take part in a major final-year drama production or pursue a dissertation. You’ll also select a specialist literature module, with topics ranging from medieval monsters and crime fiction to feminist writing, allowing you to further specialize in areas of personal interest.
