COURSE CURRICULUM

This BA Education with Year Abroad degree provides a comprehensive understanding of education by combining theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and international exposure. In the first year, students build a strong foundation by studying educational theory and practice, global education, digital learning and society, and learner identities in higher education. These modules introduce key perspectives from psychology, sociology, philosophy, and history while developing essential academic skills such as critical thinking, reflection, research, and academic writing. Students also have the flexibility to transfer after the first year to related degree pathways, including BA Education, BA Education, Childhood and Culture, or BA Education, Special Educational Needs and Inclusion. In the second year, the focus shifts to educational psychology, teaching practices, and research methods, enabling students to understand how learning occurs and how teachers operate in different educational settings. Students also personalize their studies by selecting optional modules in areas such as childhood and youth studies, inclusive education and special educational needs, early childhood development, and environmental or outdoor learning. The third year is spent abroad at one of the university's international partner institutions, allowing students to experience different education systems, broaden their global perspective, and develop intercultural communication skills while being assessed by the host university. In the final year, students complete a substantial dissertation on a topic of their choice under academic supervision while studying motivation in teaching and learning. They further customize their degree through optional modules covering mathematics education, English as a second language, childhood studies, media and learning, creativity, educational politics, community practice, and other specialist topics. Graduates develop advanced research, analytical, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in teaching (through further PGCE training), educational research, educational policy, youth and community work, educational administration, charities, international education organizations, and progression to postgraduate Master's or PhD study.
