COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Education with a Year Abroad degree offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary journey through the theory and practice of education. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation by exploring sociological, psychological, historical, and philosophical contexts of education. Core modules examine global education, digital learning, and the academic skills required for higher education, setting the stage for deeper exploration in later years. Year 2 focuses on early childhood development, transitions through childhood and youth, and educational research methods. Students also engage in practical experience through 40 hours of placement, bridging theory and practice while building research skills. The year includes a choice of optional modules, enabling students to explore special educational needs, outdoor learning, and teaching practices. Year 3 is spent studying at an approved international partner university, providing a valuable opportunity to explore education and culture from a global perspective. This immersive experience deepens students’ cultural understanding and enhances their adaptability in international educational contexts. In the final year, students return to complete a substantial independent research dissertation under academic supervision, applying the research methods learned earlier in the course. Alongside this, compulsory and optional modules challenge students to critically examine diverse narratives of childhood and key political, social, and media influences on education. This final year encourages students to specialise according to their interests and career goals, while developing transferable skills in critical thinking, research, presentation, and communication. Across all four years, the degree equips students with the knowledge, practical experience, and academic confidence to pursue various educational careers or further study. Whether progressing to a PGCE, Master’s, or entering a related field such as educational policy, social work, or youth development, graduates emerge as reflective, culturally aware, and well-rounded professionals ready to make a difference in the field of education.
