COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the four years of this journalism course, students undergo a comprehensive and immersive journey into the world of modern multimedia journalism. From the outset in Year 1, they are treated as working journalists, learning the essentials of storytelling across audio, video, and text, supported by training in legal and ethical frameworks, as well as technical skills in camera work and editing. They begin building a professional portfolio through a personal website and receive voice coaching to enhance their on-air presence. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding of the field, tackling investigative journalism and ethical questions, while sharpening their technical abilities during workshops and 15 student-led newsdays. They also explore the political and legal environment journalists operate within and begin preparing for mandatory industry placements. Year 3 is spent abroad at a partner institution, offering students the chance to broaden their academic and cultural horizons while gaining valuable life experience. This international exposure enhances their communication skills and allows them to study journalism from new perspectives. In the final year, students apply their accumulated knowledge and skills in more advanced, independent projects. They take on another round of newsdays, produce longer-form content such as documentaries, and complete a reflective journalism placement report. They also work on an extended journalism project, adhering to professional standards in law, ethics, and production. A focus on inclusivity is emphasized through a module dedicated to diversity and representation in the media. Throughout all four years, voice coaching continues to refine presentation skills, and practical experience remains central, culminating in a well-rounded and deeply practical preparation for a journalism career. This structured progression from foundational skills to advanced professional practice ensures graduates are ready to navigate and contribute meaningfully to the modern media landscape.
