COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Art History with a Year Abroad is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of art, material culture, and their historical contexts. In Year 1, students explore the basics of art history, archaeology, and anthropology, focusing on the creation of art and the social contexts that shape it. They study the processes of making art and learn about the cultural significance of various materials and objects. The modules cover the study of artists, artisans, and their works, along with the examination of art in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Students also learn key archaeological methods and explore the relationship between people and cultures, particularly focusing on social change and development. Year 2 deepens students' understanding by examining material culture, the study of objects, and their historical and contemporary significance. Modules such as "Material Worlds" and "The Lives of Objects" teach students to critically evaluate objects through different methodologies and theories. Students are also introduced to contemporary debates on art and its role in the modern world. In Year 3, students have the opportunity to study abroad at one of the university's partner institutions, gaining international experience and further academic development. The final year allows students to specialize by selecting advanced modules in art history, archaeology, and anthropology. They also complete a dissertation on a topic of their choice, working closely with a faculty supervisor. This degree equips students with the skills to critically analyze art, culture, and material objects, preparing them for careers in these diverse fields.
