COURSE CURRICULUM

The philosophy degree at UEA offers a rich and varied journey through some of the most significant ideas, thinkers, and debates that have shaped human understanding. In the first year, students are introduced to core philosophical questions and traditions, exploring both historical and contemporary perspectives. Modules such as Classic Readings in Philosophy and The Meaning of Life encourage deep reflection on enduring questions about existence, purpose, and value. Other first-year modules, including Reasoning and Logic and Ethics of Technology, develop students’ analytical and critical thinking skills while showing how philosophy applies to real-world issues. The second year builds on this foundation with a greater focus on political, historical, and ethical philosophy, including core modules like Philosophy of History and Politics and Ethics for Second Years. Students can begin to tailor their studies by choosing optional modules in areas such as environmental philosophy or philosophy of literature, or by incorporating interdisciplinary themes. The third year is spent on a placement, offering the opportunity to apply philosophical insight in a professional context, whether in education, public policy, the arts, or business. This year helps students explore career paths, develop practical skills, and gain valuable work experience. In the final year, students return to complete advanced modules such as Mind and Language and Ethics for Third Years, which explore complex debates around consciousness, meaning, morality, and human nature. Students also have the option to write a dissertation or take a special subject module focused on a particular area of interest. Throughout the degree, there is a strong emphasis on critical engagement, independent thinking, and the development of transferable skills that prepare graduates for a wide range of future opportunities.
