COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Philosophy and Politics course, students begin with a balanced mix of modules from both subjects, establishing a strong academic foundation. In the first semester, they are introduced to central philosophical questions, including the meaning of life, and to fundamental political theories as well as the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary politics. The second semester deepens this engagement by examining how radical and transformative ideas have shaped the modern world, with students choosing additional modules based on their interests from philosophy, politics, or even other disciplines. Core modules cover a range of topics such as philosophical reflections on life and self, modern political theory, contemporary global politics, and the philosophical foundations of social change. In the second year, students are able to explore more specific interests and make interdisciplinary connections between politics and philosophy. Compulsory modules explore how power has been understood and exercised throughout history, as well as how political systems are responding to global challenges. There is flexibility to explore subjects beyond the core areas, with options to select outside modules that complement the main program. In the third year, students undertake a placement year, gaining real-world work experience relevant to their degree and career goals. The placement year not only develops professional skills but also helps students reflect on how their academic knowledge applies beyond the university setting. In the fourth and final year, students choose from a range of advanced modules, allowing them to specialise further in philosophy, politics, or a combination of both. They also complete an independent research dissertation under supervision, focusing on a topic of their choice. This final year encourages in-depth analysis and critical thinking, drawing together their learning across the degree to prepare for graduate study or employment.
