COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the History degree, students gain a strong foundation in British, European, and global history through core modules covering the Medieval period to the 20th century. Key themes include state formation, religious conflict, rebellion, gender, and industrialisation, alongside the study of modern global issues such as decolonisation and climate change. Modules like Doing History introduce students to historical methodologies, while The Age of Extremes explores the contradictions of the 20th century—from total war to human rights. Students also examine specialist areas like witchcraft or interpreting visual sources, developing analytical and research skills essential for historical inquiry.The second year offers flexibility, allowing students to tailor their learning with a wide selection of optional modules. Topics range from public history and the Middle East to propaganda and America’s global role. This year encourages exploration, critical debate, and even the opportunity to study a new language or take interdisciplinary modules within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.In the third year, students undertake a placement in a sector of their choice, supported by UEA’s network and career services. This practical experience helps build employability, communication, and organisational skills. In the final year, students specialise further by selecting advanced modules or pursuing an independent dissertation project, deepening their expertise and preparing for future careers or academic pursuits.
