COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Media Studies degree, students are introduced to the foundational concepts, debates, and thinkers that define the field. Core modules such as Media Industries, Digital Media: Concepts, Technologies & Cultures, and Theorising Media and Digital Culture examine how media is produced, consumed, and theorised in modern society. Students also explore media history and representation through modules like Making Media History and Media Representation in a Global Context, gaining insights into how different social groups are portrayed and how media interacts with global cultural trends. Skills in analysis, research, and academic writing are developed early on, setting the groundwork for future study.Year 2 allows for deeper engagement with specialist topics. Students examine how media operates across different spaces in Digital Mediascapes and explore the transformation of television in the digital age through Theorising Television: From Broadcasting to Streaming. There's also the opportunity for practical experience via internships, helping students connect their academic learning with professional contexts.In the third year, students undertake a placement, gaining valuable real-world experience and developing transferable skills for future careers. This hands-on year is supported by the university’s placement team and enables students to explore fields aligned with their interests.The final year focuses on advanced research and specialisation. The compulsory Researching Contemporary Media Cultures module supports students in conducting independent research and producing creative or critical work. Optional modules allow for tailored study in areas such as gender, science fiction, or digital media, providing a rich and rounded conclusion to the degree.
