COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations degree at UEA is structured to offer a progressively deeper understanding of global politics, starting with a solid foundation in Year 1. Students explore the fundamental principles shaping international systems, including sovereignty, international law, security, and globalisation. Modules such as “Power, (Dis)Order & Security” and “Globalisation, Governance and Justice” equip students with conceptual tools to critically engage with historical and contemporary global issues, while “Introduction to Political Communication” adds a practical dimension, examining how modern media technologies influence politics. Year 2 builds on this foundation with a stronger theoretical and methodological focus. Students delve into various schools of thought in international relations—from realism to postcolonialism—through modules like “Analysing International Relations.” They also gain essential research skills through the “Introduction to Data Analysis” module, learning both qualitative and quantitative methods. This year encourages students to specialise in key thematic or regional topics, and provides the option to study abroad in the spring semester, further broadening their academic and cultural perspectives. In Year 3, the emphasis shifts to real-world experience through a placement year. Students spend up to 12 months working in a relevant professional environment, applying their academic learning and developing vital employability skills. Dedicated support is provided throughout the process, ensuring the placement aligns with students’ career goals. Finally, in Year 4, students return with a refined focus, choosing from a variety of advanced modules and completing a substantial research project or dissertation under academic supervision. This year is designed to consolidate students’ expertise and prepare them for life beyond university, whether in further study, policy-making, international organisations, or a range of other professional fields.
