COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History course at UEA provides a rich and flexible academic experience designed to develop both historical knowledge and transferable skills. In the first year, students are introduced to key periods in British, European, and global history, spanning from the Middle Ages through to the modern era. Modules focus on broad historical changes, such as the Reformation, industrialisation, and imperialism, and are complemented by “Doing History,” a core module which explores historical theory and methodology. Students also develop essential skills in research, debate, and analysis through the Key Skills program. In the second year, the course becomes entirely flexible, offering students the chance to shape their own academic journey. With modules covering a wide range of global and thematic topics—from Roman to modern history, across continents—students can choose to specialise or retain a broad focus. There’s also the opportunity to learn a language or take modules from other humanities disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary understanding. In the third year, students complete a work placement, gaining practical experience and enhancing their employability. This placement, supported by the university’s Careers Service, enables students to explore career paths in heritage, business, the public sector, and the creative industries. In the final year, students deepen their knowledge by selecting a specialist subject based on the latest academic research, alongside advanced modules on topics like the Vikings, race and migration, or the Victorian underworld. Alternatively, students can opt to write a dissertation on a historical topic of their choice. Throughout the four years, the course balances academic depth with real-world experience, preparing students not only for careers in history-related fields but also for a wide array of professions requiring analytical thinking, clear communication, and research expertise.
