COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art History course offers a richly layered academic journey that progresses from foundational exploration to advanced, research-driven study. In the first year, students are introduced to the discipline through a combination of theoretical modules and direct engagement with art. The program begins with an immersive experience at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, where students learn to analyze and interpret diverse artworks within a globally significant architectural and curatorial context. This hands-on module encourages students to challenge assumptions and refine their observational and critical thinking skills. Simultaneously, “Introduction to Art History” lays the groundwork for academic study in the field, emphasizing themes, methods, and the scholarly conversations that define art historical analysis. Other first-year modules such as “Environment, Art and Culture” deepen students’ understanding of how art functions within social and spatial contexts, examining how the purposes, appearances, and meanings of artworks evolve across time and cultures. The “Portraiture and Identity” module allows students to interrogate how visual representations of individuals construct and reflect societal notions of selfhood, class, gender, and race. Altogether, the first year offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary foundation. In the second year, students are given the freedom to customize their academic path by selecting from a broad range of specialized topics. One compulsory module, “Art in the Contemporary World,” critically examines how art functions within modern-day institutions, ideologies, and public spaces. Students evaluate how museums, galleries, and even everyday life reflect and shape the political and social roles of art, while also considering their own place as future art professionals or scholars. In the third year, the focus shifts from academic learning to practical experience, with students embarking on a year-long work placement. Supported by the university, they apply their skills in real-world contexts—ranging from heritage institutions to creative industries—while gaining career insight and expanding their professional network. This experiential year not only enhances employability but also informs students’ academic perspectives for their final year. In year four, students return to academia with greater maturity and purpose, ready to engage with complex, specialized subjects. They select three advanced modules that explore pressing historical and contemporary issues like decolonization, ecological crisis, identity politics, and memory through a global lens. A central element of the final year is the dissertation, where students conduct independent research under faculty supervision on a topic of their choosing, culminating in a 9,000-word scholarly work. This project synthesizes their accumulated knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills, providing an opportunity for original contribution and deep academic engagement. Altogether, the program is designed to cultivate critical thinkers and informed citizens, equipping students with both intellectual depth and practical versatility.
